Importing into Croatia

Stretching along the deep blue Adriatic Sea, Croatia is a dreamy gateway into European markets. While it has complex trade regulations and an inefficient judicial system, TecEx can fulfill your IOR responsibilities while you harness Croatia’s untapped potential.

Exporting and Importing to Croatia

Surrounded by Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia,  Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina by land, and Italy by sea, Croatia is a scenic country with great potential for digital infrastructure. The International Trade Administration states that Croatia’s decarbonisation efforts in the energy and transport sectors positioned it as one of the best-performing EU members for Europe’s Digital Decade initiative.

As an EU member, Croatia’s customs regulations involve standard EU tariffs, policies, and procedures. Imports to Croatia require typical trade documents like a customs declaration, commercial invoice, packing list, HS codes, a Single Administrative Document (SAD), and various import licenses and permits, depending on your shipment. Once Croatian customs have been cleared, your goods can move freely through other EU member states.

Unique Pain Points for Importing to Croatia

While Croatia has no significant trade barriers, it’s important to acknowledge that its judicial system can be described as inefficient. This increases the auditing and legal risks of importing to Croatia, with potential costly and time-consuming commercial disputes. However, these risks are handed over to TecEx when we act as your Importer of Record (IOR) or complete your DDP shipment.

Additionally, with Croatia’s main language being Croatian, followed by Serbian and Bosnian, there is a language barrier for English speakers. With our in-country experts, we can ensure that your goods clear customs with no confusion.

TecEx will optimize your logistics, from pick-up to final delivery, getting your tech goods into the Croatian market and propelling your global expansion.

As a member of the EU, Croatia doesn’t only follow the EU’s stringent trade regulations. It is also included in EU Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Our knowledge and experience with these allow us to ensure you benefit from them when possible.

Croatia’s digital revolution is ongoing, making it an ideal time to import tech. If your company strives to enter the Croatian market with AI tech, TecEx is well-versed in shipping advanced dual-use goods and AI tech to the EU. For temporary imports of tech goods like Commercial samples, goods for fairs and exhibitions, and professional equipment into Croatia, you can use an ATA Carnet. TecEx can help you apply for and utilize this document to successfully test Croatian markets with your innovative tech.

The TecEx warehousing solution also allows you to deconsolidate your goods before they reach Croatia. We have a strong relationship with the Netherlands and a network of warehousing hubs, meaning you can import via the Netherlands. In addition, TecEx can export your goods via the Netherlands as your Croatia EOR if your exports need to stop at a warehouse for consolidation, labeling, or palletizing.

Export licenses and compliance requirements for seamless exports from EU members can be challenging to obtain. With our Exporter of Record (EOR) capabilities, TecEx can get the required documents on your behalf and facilitate a streamlined export process.

Specific Compliance Regulations

Single Administrative Document (SAD)

The SAD is a vital basis for customs clearance into the EU, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Serbia, and the Republic of North Macedonia. The document minimizes administrative hassle and improves the standardization of trade data. It applies to any goods undergoing any customs procedure—export, import, warehousing, or temporary import.

Mill Test Certificate (MTC)

Also known as a Material Test Report (MTR), an MTC is required when importing iron and steel goods to any country in the EU. This prevents goods made from materials originating from Russia from entering the EU. Ideally, this is sourced from a manufacturer, but TecEx can help you navigate this complex requirement.

EORI Number Croatia

An Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number  is critical for Non-EU companies to export and import to the EU. This number can be time-consuming to obtain, but TecEx can help you acquire it.

With an EORI number, a company can then acquire Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status, which simplifies customs processes. An application and submission can take up to a year, with an additional 120 days for site visits and customs assessments afterward.
