Exporting and Importing To Denmark
Denmark’s central location makes it an attractive country for imports and exports, while its growing economy favors investors and encourages trade liberalization and foreign investment. Denmark’s top trading partners include the United States, Germany, and Sweden. The country is moving towards a highly streamlined, digital-first customs environment, and the most significant shift comes from the unification of export controls with EU regulations and the crackdown on ecommerce compliance.
Their high GDP, advanced technologies, and focus on sustainability have put Denmark on the path to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. This further emphasizes the country’s vision of increasing technology investments.

Denmark is also a member of the European Union and maintains strong relationships with the rest of Europe. Thanks to its EU membership, it can enjoy relatively low import duties of 0-14% on technology, depending on the product. This further makes it an attractive country to import into, as it shares similar trading regulations with its neighbors, Norway and Sweden.
Danish Export and Import Challenges
Importers are also obligated to adhere to trade compliance requirements. These include customs registrations, declarations, Harmonized System (HS) codes, tariff classifications, product certifications, Danish labeling, duties, and taxes. TecEx can, therefore, assist in ensuring that all documents are collected and no time is wasted.
Danish Export Control Overhaul
Danish Business Authority (DBA) is repealing its specific national list to fully align with the EU Dual-Use Regulation. Importers and exporters will no longer need to monitor two control lists, as all authorizations for high-value and sensitive tech items will be governed by the EU regime.
Additionally, Denmark is introducing new general export licenses to simplify shipments for allied nations, including Ukraine and Greenland. This compliance development may require current export license holders to re-register under the EU regime.
Mandatory Digital Bookkeeping
All VAT-registered entities, including foreign tech companies, with a net turnover exceeding DKK 300,000 for two consecutive years must use a mandatory digital accounting system to generate SAF-T files and handle electronic invoicing formats such as Peppol BIS.
Failure to comply can result in hefty fines of up to DKK 1.5 million (~200,000 euros).
EU-Wide Ecommerce Duty
While Denmark is a major hub for ecommerce tech, rules for low-value imports are changing rapidly.
The EU agreed to abolish the de minimis €150 duty exemption rule and, instead, a new €3 customs duty will apply to all ecommerce packages valued below €150.
Online marketplaces are now treated as “deemed importers” and are responsible for ensuring that tech products meet Danish safety and customs standards.
Enhanced Product Safety Surveillance
After 50% of small electronics were found to be non-compliant in 2025, Denmark’s safety authority, Sikkerhedsstyrelsen, has intensified audits.
Under the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), surveillance explicitly covers digital and hybrid products. If hardware requires a software update to remain safe, importers are legally responsible for the update’s delivery and compliance.
If a warehouse or fulfillment center is used in Denmark, it is now legally an “economic operator” and must verify that you have a technical file and an EU-based authorized representative for your tech gear.

Specific Compliance Regulations for Importing to Denmark
Single Administrative Document
A single Administrative document (SAD) is required to describe the movement of goods for exporting outside the European Union. The SAD can be used for all EU member states and includes duties and VAT.
Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI)
An EORI number is mandatory for all companies outside of the EU; hence all non-EU countries would require this number for customs clearance when importing into Denmark. Once this number is obtained, it can be used amongst all EU member states when trading.
Packing List
A packing list is needed, which requires in-depth descriptions of the tech products being shipped into Denmark. This will allow for a smooth and quick customs clearance and clarify all uncertainties regarding quantities and specifications.
Certificate of Origin
A certificate of origin is needed for imports into Denmark. This document includes contact information, a description of the goods, an airway bill number, and more.
Commercial Invoice
All international shipments imported into Denmark require a commercial invoice. This invoice requires various components, including the reason for exports, shipment numbers, incoterms, and a description of the goods.
Denmark’s Autonomous Regions and Their Distinct Trade Identities
Denmark is deeply integrated into the EU’s single market and adheres to its digital and commercial regulations, including cutting-edge initiatives like the AI Act and NIS2 Directive. The country boasts a highly diversified and innovative economy, with leading sectors in pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, high-tech manufacturing, and IT services. Metropolitan Denmark, the political and economic center of the Danish Realm, is a net exporter of high-value tech goods and services, and it provides both financial and infrastructural support to its autonomous territories.
Greenland
Greenland, the world’s largest island, maintains a distinct economic and trade profile shaped by its geographic isolation and political autonomy. Greenland is not bound by the EU’s trade regulations or digital directives, which allows it flexibility but also limits access to certain markets and funding opportunities.
While Denmark provides substantial financial support through an annual block grant, Greenland is actively exploring new economic avenues, including mining and tourism. Technologically, the island’s focus is on infrastructure development, with most tech imports geared toward supporting core sectors and addressing logistical challenges presented by its harsh environment and dispersed population.
The Faroe Islands
Situated in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands enjoy a high degree of self-governance and operate outside the European Union, giving them control over trade policy and customs. This autonomy has enabled them to establish bilateral trade agreements that support their primary industry: fishing and aquaculture, which accounts for over 90% of export income.
Though the economy remains narrowly focused, the Faroese government is pushing to diversify, particularly in digital infrastructure and innovation. Recent national initiatives aim to boost the islands’ digitalization and foster a more robust tech ecosystem to support industries like smart aquaculture and subsea infrastructure. However, their small size and market limitations mean they continue to rely heavily on imported technology to modernize their economy.
